The inflation and bursting of economic bubbles, the expansion of wealth and poverty, the global spread of viral infections – what do these diverse phenomena have in common? Are these global problems that world leaders should be addressing? The answer is, of course, yes. However, from a scientific viewpoint, the commonality of these issues is that they are part of a dynamic, non-equilibrium system that can be handled using nonlinear science. The behavior of such systems, referred to as Complex Systems, can be explained using a common mathematical model – a power law distribution.
Scigineer recognized that the variety of behaviors in cyberspace can be explained using the network version of the power law distribution. Based on this theory, we developed a method for analyzing the hierarchy that underlies large quantities of data. With this technology, information that resembles likes and preferences, as well as user groupings, can be extracted from a seemingly random, complex dataset. This enables a user to find the desired information without searching. This is a completely new information technology, the first in the world that uses a natural science approach to handling the artifact known as cyberspace.
Scigineer's origins are in a university laboratory, researching nonlinear systems, and developing information systems capable of evolution and learning like living systems. When the Internet was born, and looking at the eco-system that it formed, we became convinced that the results of the research could offer an unbelievably large benefit. In particular, the explosive pace at which information was increasing, soon to exceed the limits that could be handled by an individual, would become a serious problem, and so we started working on developing a new information retrieval system.
In 2008, Scigineer succeeded in developing a "discovery engine." This is technology that gives a recommendation for the desired information based on a large dataset of user behavior. The system has been highly evaluated globally, and in just one year from the start of sales, 80 sites across the United States and Japan have adopted it, with a current user base of approximately 37 million individuals. Using the behavior history of the "information haves", this technology can support the "information have-nots", thus helping to resolve the global digital divide.
Vision
The amount of data accumulated by humanity in the last 300,000 years is easily exceeded by the amount of data in the first 3 years of the 21st century. The activities of people who are aiming towards a better life are generating more and more information, and it already seems that there is an infinite amount available. This trend will force humanity to face a serious problem in the near future. We will reach an era where we will no longer know what to search for. The flood of information will entirely consume the precious time and interests of the consumer.
At that time, the search engine will be rendered ineffective. In order for a search engine to work, the user must enter the appropriate vocabulary. However, it is impossible to comprehend the entire vocabulary associated with the information available today. Also, that which you do not already know, you will also never know in the future. To say nothing of the fact that a search engine is ineffective when it comes to searching for things that are dependent on emotions and sensitivities, in spite of their intrinsically importance for humanity, because of the difficulty in verbalizing such things.
Scigineer has focused on the development of technology for analyzing the dynamic structure of a dataset composed of an enormous amount of user behaviors. Neither linguistic semantics nor statistical probability is important. The focus is on network topology, dynamics, and self-organizational processes. The actions of individuals are for their own happiness. However, when the behavior of an extremely large number of people is accumulated, a universal structural property is formed. Cyberspace is the new "nature" of the 21st century. Based on basic principles of the universe, Scigineer's technology can provide the user with information they will like, independent of the language.
The superiority of Scigineer's innovation in the long term is our behavior history database (referred to as Behavior Warehouse), in terms of the cumulative size of the data and the length of time over which it has been accumulated. That is, the more data that is accumulated, the greater its value, with the accuracy continually increasing because of the system's self-learning architecture. It is impossible to turn back time and collect from the past the "volatile" data that constitutes user behavior. This means that, even if another company develops the same kind of technology in the future, the leading position that the Scigineer Behavior Warehouse has established up to that point will not be shaken.
